Cardio is essential, no matter how old you are. Dr. Mike Bohl, MD, MPH, ALM is a medical expert at Eat This, Not That, and recently told the site about the importance of staying active as you get older.
“One of the main benefits of cardio is that it gets your heart beating and encourages efficient blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues in the body,” Bohl said. “This helps keep your blood vessels compliant (instead of stiff) and is tremendously beneficial for preventing heart disease and blood vessel disease.
Cardio is also very important for improving insulin sensitivity, which can help protect against diabetes.” Suggested cardio workouts include swimming, biking, walking with weights, and team sports like pickleball and tennis.
