Derek Chauvin to be Sentenced Friday; Faces 30 Years in Prison
Two months after a jury found him guilty of second- and third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin is set to be sentenced for the crime.
The former Minneapolis cop is due in court Friday, when a judge is expected to hand down a sentence that could land Chauvin in prison for up to 30 years, prosecutors say.
Chauvin, who has yet to comment on the May 2020 incident, is expected to speak before he learns of his fate. Chauvin is accused of killing Floyd by kneeling on the handcuffed man’s neck, ignoring his repeated pleas that he couldn’t breathe.
The incident sparked nationwide protests and calls to defund local police departments.
More than a year after George Floyd took his last breath, the ex-cop who murdered him will face a Minnesota judge and receive a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.https://t.co/NOOjYNTcmV
