Don’t Wash Your Produce Before Storing It, It Could Cost You, or Make You Sick

The way you store your food matters! Here are some common food storage mistakes that you need to stop now.

Washing your produce before storing it may make you sick. Excess moisture could lead to bacterial growth, and waiting to rinse could help preserve any water-soluble vitamins the produce contains.

Making sure your refrigerator and freezer are set at the right temperature. Your refrigerator should be set at 40 degrees while your freezer should be set at zero degrees to keep food its freshest.

Stop using butter dishes to store your food; the plastic could contain “forever chemicals” or PFAs and doesn’t provide an air-tight seal. Some produce doesn’t belong in the refrigerator, such as tomatoes, lemons, and garlic which are all better at room temperature.
