Four Ways to Toot Your Own Horn at Work

Bragging about yourself at work isn’t a good look.  So how else are you supposed to get noticed, and get ahead?

Here are four ways to toot our own horn without looking like a jerk . . .

1.  Compare yourself to yourself.  Comparing yourself to others can sound like bragging.  So try comparing your recent accomplishments to things you’ve done in the past.  Or, say things like, “I’m a lot better at that than I used to be.”

2.  Ask for feedback on something you know is good.  When you’re proud of something, check in with your boss and ask them how you are doing so far.

3.  Focus on the company’s success, not your own.  If you have to brag, make it about how well the company is doing, and how you’ve helped make it happen.  In other words, focus on the effect, not the act itself.

4.  Accept compliments, and be professional about it.  It’s no fun when people won’t accept a compliment.  So don’t dodge them.  Just be gracious, say thanks, and don’t hog all the credit if other people helped.
