Recall: Purina Dog Food Could Be Deadly To Your Pet

A high-end dog food that’s supposed to keep pets healthy is being recalled after the Food and Drug Administration found it could actually kill them.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental, a type of dry dog food, has been found to contain elevated levels of vitamin D, the FDA reveals. Too much vitamin D can cause “vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination and excessive drooling to renal dysfunction,” according to the agency.

A continued diet with too much vitamin D can even be fatal, per the FDA. People who have the recalled product should stop feeding it to their pet immediately and throw it away in a container that other animals can’t get into, the FDA says.

“We apologize to pet owners and veterinarians for any concerns or inconvenience this situation has caused,” reads a statement from Purina. “As pet experts and pet owners ourselves, the health and well-being of pets is our top priority.”
