Study Finds Childhood Obesity Worsened During Pandemic
An ‘alarming’ study from the CDC found that childhood obesity rates in the U.S. got worse during the pandemic.
The study found that obese children gained between 12-14 pounds during the pandemic year, nearly double the typical rate.
Children at a healthy weight also tended to gain an extra two pounds on average during the pandemic.
Overall, the percentage of obese children and teens increased from 19% to 22% in 2020.
“Preschool and school-aged children, particularly those with obesity, had larger pandemic-associated increases in BMI than did adolescents,” wrote Samantha Lange, an epidemiologist in the CDC’s population health and health care team.
