That Voice At The McDonald’s Drive-Thru Might Be A Computer

BATH, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 19: A branch of McDonald's is pictured on February 19, 2018 in Bath, England. The number of takeaway restaurants has increased significantly in the last few years and this has raised concerns that this can lead to over-consumption in cheap, unhealthy high-fat nutrient-poor food and drink leading to higher body weight and greater risk of obesity. Times really are tough out there – even Alexa is getting a part-time job at McDonald’s.

The fast-food chain is testing out a voice-driven AI program – similar to Alexa or Siri – in drive-thru lanes to help speed up service.  That means the voice you hear coming through the speaker might not be a real person. McDonald’s has been focused on reducing drive-thru time for customers – especially with a surge of drive-thru traffic due to the pandemic.
