The Difference Between A Hurricane, Cyclone, and Typhoon
Hurricane season is here, which means we’ll be hearing a lot about not just hurricanes, but tropical cyclones and typhoons.
But how can you tell one storm from another? Turns out, they’re pretty much the same thing – in fact, ‘cyclone’ is a generic term for tropical systems that can become hurricanes if the grow strong enough.
The rest comes down to location – a storm in the northwest Pacific ocean is a ‘typhoon’. A storm in central or eastern North Pacific, or in the North Atlantic, is a hurricane.
Anywhere else in the world, it’s referred to as a ‘tropical cyclone’.
