‘World’s Deepest Shipwreck’ Found 4 Miles Under Pacific Ocean
An explorer has set a record for finding the world’s deepest shipwreck.
The wreckage of the USS Destroyer Escort Samuel B. Roberts, which sunk in 1944, has been found on the Pacific Ocean floor, four miles below the surface.
That’s 6,895 meters deep. By comparison, Mount Kilimanjaro stretches 5,896 meters into the sky.
Victor Vescovo, the explorer who led the search, says sunken ships can help fill gaps in historical holes. “Finding the wrecks can help bring closure, and also bring details about the battle that perhaps we didn’t know before,” he says. “As we say, ‘Steel doesn’t lie.'”
SUBMECHANOPHOBIA 😱 | It lurks over four miles deep below the Pacific Ocean, split in half, and lodged on a slope. There’s a new world’s deepest shipwreck to be identified and surveyed — and it’s the USS Destroyer Escort Samuel B. Roberts. https://t.co/m5EKDlBY4w
