Man Survives 24 Days At Sea By Eating Ketchup

A Dominican man has been rescued after being lost at sea for 24 days with only ketchup to eat.

Elvis Francois, 47, was working on his boat in St. Maarten in December when bad weather caused it to drift out to sea.

By the time he mounted the sail so he could navigate back to port, he found that he’d become hopelessly lost, he says. Making matters worse is he discovered he’d lost cell phone service.

“There was nothing else I could do than sit down and wait,” Francois says. “I had no food; just a bottle of ketchup that was on the boat [and] garlic powder. So, I mixed it up with some water.

So I had this to survive for 24 days in the sea.” Francois was finally found on Wednesday about 120 miles from Puerto Bolivar after he scrawled the word “help” on the back of his boat. Despite his limited diet, a rep for the Colombian Navy says Francois was “found to be in good health.”
