More “Good News” Stories from the Coronavirus Outbreak – Friday Edition

Here are a few more good news stories from the outbreak . . .

1.  A 45-year-old guy in New York named Jeff Gerson got the virus in March and ended up on a ventilator, but survived.  And once he recovered, he spent five months tracking down all 116 healthcare workers who saved his life, just to say thank you.

2.  We can’t all do big things to help, but the little things add up too:  A 93-year-old veteran in Ohio named John Hobson has been whittling walking sticks . . . selling them for $3 on the side of the road . . . and donating all the money to his local food bank.

3.  Genome sequencing is used to track small changes in how the virus mutates, so researchers can track it better.  And yesterday, doctors in Australia announced a new method that does it a lot faster.  Instead of 24 hours, they can now do it in four.

4.  Doctors in Russia have been making house calls for people who are self-isolating.  So a group of volunteers recently stepped up to serve as a free taxi service that gets them back and forth.  And now because of that, they’re able to see 70% more patients.

5.  An annual bike-a-thon called the Pan-Mass Challenge raised more than expected this year.  They were hoping to bring in $41 million for cancer research, and ended up with $50 million.  A large chunk of that money was already fast-tracked in May to kickstart a COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.
