Snow Changing To Rain Today, Severe Thunderstorms Possible Monday ❄🌧⛈
NWS Des Moines

As precipitation moves into the area this morning, some initial moderate to heavy snowfall is expected for areas of central into northern Iowa. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour may result in quick accumulations of a couple to few inches, quickly causing travel hazards. By this evening, precipitation turns to all rain across the state, continuing into Monday. A few thunderstorms will then be possible, including potential for a few strong to severe Monday afternoon and evening. All the while, gusty winds into the 30s to low 40s mph will be around.

For many outside of southern Iowa, initial precipitation should be of the snow or wintry mix variety before turning over to all rain through the afternoon and evening hours. Moderate to heavy snowfall rates may yield quickly accumulating snowfall amounts of a couple to a few inches and hazardous travel conditions.

As if the wintry weather and gusty winds are not enough, there may be an opportunity for a few strong thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening. The main threats would be for large hail and damaging winds.
