Vehicle Moonroof’s Are Mysteriously Exploding In Florida

Investigators have a bona fide mystery on their hands after the moonroof’s on hundreds of Florida vehicles have “exploded” in recent weeks.

Among the motorists who have been showered with glass from the strange phenomenon is Port Richey resident Heath Martinson, who says he was driving his 83-year-old mother home when the moonroof on his Honda Civic suddenly blew out for no apparent reason. “All of a sudden you just hear this explosion above you,” Martinson says. “I’m thinking, the top of the car is coming down me almost. When I got home and just saw the expanse of this damage, I just couldn’t understand it. I was in shock, actually.”

However, a spokesman for Honda says company technicians have looked into the report and could not identify a problem with Civic moonroofs. “There has been no identified defect in the moonroof glass of the 2020 Civic and certainly no service campaign or recall,” the company rep says. “The most likely cause is an object striking it or even prior damage, finally cracking as the vehicle body flexes.”
